The stress hormones are the same hormones that trigger your “fight or flight” response. This response is designed to protect you in an emergency by preparing you. When this happens day after day, it can put your health at risk so let’s walk you through some stress management techniques to help combat anxiety.

Your stress levels are linked to your overall health and so it’s important that we take some time to manage stress symptoms and relieve the stress we may be feeling at work or in other elements of your life. We all know it isn’t comfortable to manage stress symptoms on a day to day basis and hence I’ve built this list of stress management tips to keep you away from long term health complications in your respiratory system, digestive system, your immune system, and your reproductive system.

So, without further ado, here are our 10 stress management techniques:

Breathe deeply

The first of our stress management tips is the simplest and you’re an expert at it since you’ve been doing it since birth. Breathing exercises can help you relax and lower the stress in your body. This is because deep breaths send signals which tell your brain to take a moment to calm down and relax.

Do Yoga

I know MatMat might be a little bias over this stress management technique, but it really is scientifically proven as a great way to reduce stress symptoms and anxiety. Yoga for stress and anxiety relief is a mind-body practice that combines poses, controlled breathing, meditation, and relaxation. Yoga for stress management can help lower your blood pressure and lower your heart rate. If you’re hesitant to try yoga for stress management then why not check out some online sessions to put it to the test. If you do decide that yoga for stress and anxiety relief purposes is for you, I’d love if you considered one of our eco-friendly yoga mats as your foundation.

Meditate

Stress relief meditation for as little as 10 min a day can do wonders for managing stress symptoms and reducing anxiety. When you meditate for stress relief, your breathing rate slows, your blood pressure goes down and your muscles relax. Some have described euphoric sensations during sessions of stress relief meditation due to the endorphins released by your body. This is another very simple stress management technique that you can easily implement into your day-to-day routine.

Exercise

This stress management technique might take a little more effort and isn’t one for the couch surfers and Netflix bingers. Exercising for stress relief pumps up your endorphins which are your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. Exercising is also a great way to meet new people who you can rely upon during periods of anxiety which is a bonus stress management tip.

Listen to Music

The soothing power of music has been reported for centuries and that’s why it made it to our list of stress management techniques. Taking yourself away from a stressful situation and listening to music is a fantastic way to escape the worries of day-to-day life. Music has a unique link to our emotions and selecting the right genre can have a relaxing effect on our mind and body. I find that acoustic covers serve as a fantastic stress management tool, but everyone will have their own personal way of connecting with this stress management technique.

Laugh

What did the yogi say to his dog? Nama, stay! I know I probably didn’t succeed with that one but hunting out things to make you laugh is a fantastic stress management tip. Like our other stress management techniques, laughing releases endorphins but also increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies. Laughing can also reduce cortisol and increase dopamine and growth hormones which help combat stress symptoms.

Chew gum

You might think this is an unusual stress management tip, but studies have shown that chewing gum can reduce stress because it stimulates the vagus nerve which helps you relax by working with the parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. This simple stress management technique is one you can subtly recommend for others by offering gum to your boss or your colleagues at work.

Get a Massage

I know this stress management technique might not be one that everyone can afford but perhaps you have a friend that would be willing to help a hand if you offer a massage in return! A relaxing massage can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, relax your muscles and increase endorphins. I love the idea of this article inspiring more people to take responsibility for their stress management but also helping others around them to do the same.

Hang-out with your pet

Here’s an easy stress management tip for those with furry (or hairless!) companions. If you have a pet, he or she can help you reduces stress. All pet owners know the joys of their little animal friends and how they can put you in a great mood with their unconditional love. Using this stress management technique can also make you laugh (which I have already explained is a stress management tool in itself) with their tricks and antics.

Sex

I chose a cheeky stress management technique to finish, pun intended. Oxytocin, or “love hormones” as they are called, and endorphins elevate you feel euphoria, well-being, and relaxation. This can be a fantastic way to relieve stress symptoms and anxiety and rounds off our ten stress management techniques. Get your Tinderella story started and let go of some of that pent-up energy you cheeky devils.
